Olympic sensation Simone Biles made a subtle yet significant political reference following her latest historic gold medal triumph on Friday.
Biles solidified her status as the most decorated U.S. gymnast in Olympics history by clinching her eighth medal on Tuesday.
Her remarkable achievements culminated in another gold medal win in the women’s all-around gymnastics event on Thursday, surpassing the previous record-holder Shannon Miller, who had seven Olympic medals.
In response to a social media post by singer Ricky Davila, which featured an image of Biles with the caption “Iconic photo of the GOAT mastering her black job and collecting Gold Medals,” Biles reshared the message with her own addition: “I love my black job,” accompanied by a black heart emoji.
While some individuals in the media interpreted this as a direct criticism of former President Donald Trump’s comments regarding illegal aliens taking jobs from black Americans, it remained unclear whether that was Biles’ intended meaning.
The interaction caught the attention of NBA star LeBron James, who expressed his approval of it through a retweet shared by Biles.
Trump’s comments were originally made during a debate with President Joe Biden, who has since exited the presidential race.
The remarks stirred controversy, with some critics accusing Trump of “racism and xenophobia.”
Notably, Trump further reinforced his stance at subsequent speaking engagements by asserting that illegal aliens had also deprived Hispanic Americans of employment opportunities.
Biles has not shied away from addressing political issues in the past.
In 2021, she voiced her anger and revulsion at the rioting that took place at the U.S. Capitol and subsequently defended athletes against those who argue they should refrain from expressing their political views publicly.
Additionally, in 2018, Biles disclosed that she had been sexually assaulted by former USA Gymnastics team physician Larry Nassar.
Nassar was convicted on seven charges of sexual assault and sentenced to up to 175 years in prison for his abhorrent actions.
